    How it rolls

Each roll draws from your browser’s cryptographic random number generator and maps it onto the faces of the die with no rounding bias, so a d6 gives each face exactly a one-in-six chance. Held dice keep their value; every other die is rolled fresh. Nothing about a previous roll affects the next one, however long a streak runs.

    Which games use which dice

    DiceUsed in
2 six-sidedBackgammon (each player has a pair), Shut the Box and most family board games
    3 six-sidedBunco (per table), Left Right Center (special faces; 1–3 dot, 4 L, 5 C, 6 R)
5 six-sidedYahtzee, with up to three rolls a turn
6 six-sidedFarkle, setting aside scoring dice as you go
d4 to d20Role-playing games, where each size stands for a different weapon, spell or check

    Two-dice odds

Two six-sided dice can land 36 ways. The table counts how many of those give each total. It is why 7 comes up most and why the tiles 7, 8 and 9 go early in Shut the Box.

    Dice roller: questions people ask

Is an online dice roller really random?
This one uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, the same source used for security keys, and maps it to each face without bias. Every face of every die has the same chance on every roll, and one roll has no effect on the next.
What is the most common total with two dice?
Seven. Six of the 36 ways two dice can land add up to 7, so it comes up one roll in six on average. Totals of 2 and 12 each have only one way to happen, a 1-in-36 chance.
    What do d4, d6 and d20 mean?
The number after the d is how many sides the die has. A d6 is an ordinary cube numbered 1 to 6; a d20 has twenty faces numbered 1 to 20. Board and family games almost always use d6, while role-playing games use the full set from d4 to d20.
How do I keep some dice and reroll the rest?
Tap a die after a roll to hold it; held dice get a red outline and stay put when you roll again. Tap it again to release it. This is how Yahtzee and Farkle turns work.
Can I roll more than one kind of die at once?
Not in a single roll. Pick the size, roll, then switch sizes for the next roll. The history keeps both results, marked with the die size, so you can add them up.
Does the dice roller save my rolls?
Only on this device, and only the last few, so you can check a disputed roll. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and clearing the history removes it.
