How the scoring works
Only one team scores on each hand of Euchre, so the score keeper just needs three facts: which team named trump (the makers), how many of the 5 tricks they won, and whether the maker went alone. The points follow our Euchre rules page.
- Makers win 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point to the makers.
- Makers win all 5 tricks (a march): 2 points.
- A lone maker wins 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point.
- A lone maker wins all 5 tricks: 4 points.
- Makers win 2 or fewer (euchred): 2 points to the defenders.
The first team to 10 points wins. A hand scores at most 4, so a team sitting on 9 can still be caught, and since only one team scores per hand there are never ties. Bicycle’s rules also allow shorter games to 5 or 7, which you can pick under Table rules. Defending alone is a house rule listed by pagat.com: when a maker goes alone, one defender may also go alone, and a euchre then scores 4 instead of 2. It is off unless you switch it on.
Worked examples
Example 1: a loner from 7
Your team leads 7 to 5. You call hearts holding both bowers, the ace and king of hearts and the ace of clubs, and go alone. You take all 5 tricks. A lone march scores 4: 7 + 4 = 11, and you win. Had you taken only 4 tricks, the hand would score 1 and you would be at 8.
Example 2: a euchre
The score is 6 to 8. The other team orders up spades but wins only 2 tricks. They are euchred, so your team, the defenders, scores 2: 6 + 2 = 8 to 8. In the tool: tap Them for who called trump, 2 for tricks, then Add this hand. The 2 points go to you automatically.
Scoring as you go
Enter each hand as soon as the fifth trick is played, before the deal moves left. The line above the Add button tells you who is about to score and why, so the table can agree before it goes on the board. If someone taps the wrong team, press Undo last hand and enter it again. The game is saved in your browser, so you can close the tab between hands.
Many tables still keep score with a pair of 5s and 6s from the deck, and this is a quick check on them. For a paper version of the rules to keep by the deck, print the Euchre printable rules.
Questions people ask
- How many points is a euchre worth?
- When the team that named trump wins 2 tricks or fewer, they are euchred and the defending team scores 2 points.
- How many points do you get for going alone in Euchre?
- A lone player who wins all 5 tricks scores 4 points. A lone player who wins 3 or 4 tricks scores only 1, the same as a normal make.
- What is a march in Euchre?
- A march is when the makers win all 5 tricks. With partners it scores 2 points; alone it scores 4.
- What score do you play to in Euchre?
- Ten points is standard in North America. Bicycle’s rules also allow games to 5 or 7 by agreement, and you can pick either in the score keeper.
- Can the defenders go alone?
- Some tables let a defender go alone against a lone maker and score 4 for a euchre. Many home games do not allow it, so it is off by default here and can be switched on under Table rules.
